Selling wine is a team ambition all the way through the process from farm to table. On a boat, unless everyone is doing their job and their position, one weak link or fail can be quite dangerous. It may sound cliché but it’s all teamwork. I’ve had the great pleasure of being part of the 12M class for some time sailing with a great crew of seasoned and experienced sailors on Ted Turner’s former 12M “American Eagle”.

You’ve got to know how to talk to people and close the deal.īOE: You’re a sailor! What do you love about sailing, how long have you sailed and where? How is it similar to selling wine?ĪW: I do love to sail which is why I have had a home in Newport, RI for over 20 years. It’s a sailing-centric city so it’s hard not to stumble onto a boat at some point. I learned quickly that street selling is still one of the most essential skills even today in our new digital age.

She set the precedent for a leading lady in an executive world full of men at that time.īOE: Can you tell us about a career-learning moment that was instrumental in getting you to where you are today?ĪW: Cutting my teeth in the Northeast having come from California gave me a lot of grit. I was responsible for the entire Los Angeles area and worked with some of the best sommeliers and wine shops in the area to build their programs.īOE: Was there a key mentor who was pivotal in your career?ĪW: Mireille Giuliano, the former President of Clicquot, Inc gave me my first supplier opportunity back in 2000 when I came to New England to run Clicquot. It was my first job in the wine industry - for Associated Wine Distributors (eventually purchased by Henry Wine Group) representing a beautiful portfolio of Austrian, Spanish, Italian, Australian and boutique California Wines. One of my account representatives was leaving his sales position and they offered me the position.

I had moved to Los Angeles to be the GM of a restaurant called JiRaffe in Santa Monica where I also found myself in the position of building the wine list. I had the pleasure of working in rich wine environments (like the Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas, TX). Today we’re catching up with Allison on her career path and how one of her hobbies, sailing, is relevant to selling wine 🛥🍷īOE: What excites you most about your new role?ĪW: To be with the world’s leading wine company paving a new way for both B Corporations and Regenerative Organic practices has me really excited about the future of our industry.īOE: Can you tell us about your first job in wine?ĪW: It’s hard to go back that far! I was first introduced to wine through the restaurant industry. We were thrilled to recently announce that Allison Wetsel was named Senior Vice President of Sales here at Bonterra Organic Estates.
